Has anyone had any reliability issues or failures with with boa lacing systems?

I've been avoiding shoes with them as they seem hokey, cheap and liable to fail. This is only based on in store try ons and initial impressions, I don't have any actual riding time on them. I also witnessed a shoe failure by a fellow racer on my first AZTR which turned me off of the idea of ever getting them.

Are they legit and hold up to the stresses and beatings of proper hike a bike, rock strikes etc..? or are my initial feelings about them true?

Thanks.

I test for BOA. I used them for a Tour Divide, and my month long Tour 14er. They get my approval. No problems, and the dials always outlasted the shoes. I'm anxiously awaiting my next test pair!

For AZTR, I'd probably just go with 0 drop trail runners, personally.

Your nod of approval is good enough for me Justin. Thanks.

AZT, go with flats and a good hiking shoe that interfaces to the pedal well.

Thanks, each their own and I know what I prefer. Just asking about BOA systems failing or having issues.

Specialized S-works MTB shoes for 4-5yrs and no problems.  Replaced the cable each year myself and the dials once about midway thru the shoes life.  No problems.  Replacing cable was easy (after the first one as a learning experience).  If you are in a dusty and muddy place, they might require a little more maintenance.  Near the end of the life, it seemed like it was harder to keep the cable moving easily, I usually just "waxed" the cable with a little soap where it went thru the guides on the shoe.

I have had good luck with mine.

That said, they offer free lifetime warranty/parts. For my bikepacking shoes, I went to their website and ordered a set of warranty replacements (FOC) prior to needing them and carry them as spares just in case. They weight nothing and just go in my tool kit with the other spares in a small ziplock...

Have had good luck as well with Boa lacing on my Scott's. Original cables and dials made it through the Great Divide and other rides.

Thanks for posting. Realized it's maybe time to do some parts replacement and also get a spare to carry. (thanks gregclimbs)
