Hey folks, Just got my first bikepacking bike built around the lovely Velo Orange Piolet. One of the only negative things I read about this bike was the short head tube and the need for spacers, and boy were they right! At just under 6', I could have gone with either a medium or large frame and went with the medium as I've found I feel a bit stretched out on anything 18" or above and am not a fan of super short stems. I also went with dirt drops.(please refrain from telling me I should have gone with a large frame) So, this is where people get to chime in their opinions....I've got 80mm  of spacers under the stem(100mm Thomson with 10degree angle) and it all feels wonderful and I'm super comfortable on it, but will that amount of stem tube sticking out not only get me made fun of, but put too much stress on the head tube? RE head tube stress - I wouldn't think so.

Thanks for the reply, lads. With some more tweaking, I dropped down to 60mm of spacers. I'm almost cool again.

Rule #1 - Ignore what people say about your apparel or your bike. If it feels good ride it.
Rule #2 - Ride at the pace that you want to ride. You don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Good rules to follow for sure. That site, and the rules, are pretty far on the side of tongue and cheek, and mostly road race leaning. But I will say that during my road racing days, it's funny (scary?) how many of those rang true. turboloveclub: I think you're bike will be fine as it is, and like everyone else has said, if it fits and feels good, then it's all good. |

I just built a Surly ECR. I was waiting on the frame when I wrecked and hurt my shoulder pretty good. So, I used the recovery time to build it, and when the LBS asked about cutting down the steerer tube, I said "leave it for now until my shoulder heals up." So I started with about 100 mm and am down to 80 mm.
But hey, I bought this frame so I could be a little more upright. lol

I've been leaving my steer tubes long and putting spacers on the top of the stem. If I ever sell the fork, people don't have to worry about it being cut too short.

Better a long steer tube than requiring a steer tube extender, those things are fugly.
(as a steer tube extender owner)
