I'm about to purchase a new ultralight down jacket. I've always used a standard jacket without a hood, but am considering going with a hoody this time. The Patagonia Ultralight comes in both models. Any thoughts on pros or cons either way? Thanks

I like the hood. Cost just a little more, but really helps keep you warm. Cheap insurance.

I second the hood. I have a stoic pullover with a hood, that I love. That extra ounce adds a lot of warmth/comfort.
**edit** in regards to the excellent link from mr. marx, I usually use mine for off bike warmth, and long downhills. I keep it in a lightweight waterproof stuff-sack and typically use it with a waterproof shell.

Thanks for the link Addy, I somehow missed that. I was leaning toward the Patagonia or possibly Marmot due to great quality and the pricing I get on those brands. I'll have to take a closer look at the "uber downs".

Will be interested in what you decided to go with. I am also considering a replacement down jacket as I want to be able to pack smaller and lighter. I have pretty much narrowed my choice down to a Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisper. I am not going with a hood as I use a beanie anyway. Andrew |

Just got my Montbell Ex-Light Down Anorak a few days ago. Light! I've used a Patagonia Special Edition (900 fill) jacket for the past few years. Worked great but on really cold mornings on the bike and when trying to sleep on super cold nights I longed for a hood. My use this far has been on the fat bike in snowy conditions. I like the hood! The Ex Light packs smaller and is about 100grams lighter than my Patagonia 900 fill jacket. The hood seems to add warmth beyond the actual weight of the jacket.

I've had one of their quilts for almost 10 years. It's perfect and the customer service is top rate. |

I really like my Arcteryx Cerium LT Hoody. A few oz more that the MH Ghost but with the synthetic insulation in high wear/wet out areas and there amazing customer service I think it is worth the cost.

I ride early in the morning in Lake Tahoe area when the mud is frozen. I would not be interested in doing that without my Stoic Anorak. TRANSLATION: Yes Hood!
