Do people not hit their knees with these?  I'm hesitant to buy one because it seems like I would hit my knees when standing up to pedal.
Thoughts?

My knees brush them sometimes on my Fargo, which has a very short reach. Only when i stand and lean forward. Doesn't bug me. If you're not sure, tie a teddy bear, hand towel, crumpled up pair of undies, etc. to your bars with some tape and toe straps and ride around.

I finished the 2013 TD.  I did the whole damn thing,
excluding the 2013 detours, in good style and—as
far as I know—totally in accordance with the rules.

Thanks.  I generally stand a bunch while riding.  I can't imagine not hitting my knees which would drive me bonkers.  Guess I'll have to pass.

On my Pugsley, no, I don't hit them. On my Fargo and road bike, yes, depending on grade and bike position.

i rigged two chalk bags up like mountain feedbags, for a fraction of cost and I only notice a  bit of rubbage standing up and cranking hard. they are great, i like 'em a lot.

but i'm a lanky guy, on a big bike, and my set-up only rubs a tad, not much, not near enough to warrant removal. it sounds like your set-up might be different, which is why i'd echo the advice of matt and simulate riding with something draped over your stem and tied in to the handlebar.
