I've been backpacking for several years and have gone on numerous trips and know a lot about lightweight backpacking, but I'm new to mountain biking. I ended up getting a Marlin Bobcat a few weeks ago and haven't done much more than ride it around town. I know it's not a top-notch bike necessarily, but it seems pretty decent. Would it suffice, or should I get a full suspension bike?

Just about any bike will work for bikepacking.
Start out with few shakedown trips to see what works and what doesn't for you.
Already knowing lightweight backpacking gear and techniques will really help you tune your bike camping kit.
I find with a bike carrying my gear I can carry a few more comfort items.

Oh! first post, welcome to the forum.

Full suspension will give you comfort on rough singletrack. On other routes, like forest roads, you won't feel much difference. If want some extra plush on your bike, better get some high volume tires.
Many people choose hardtail or even rigid because of simplicity and extra room in frame triangle.
In my only personal opinion use what you already have and have fun.  thumbsup icon_biggrin

Thanks, stumpyfsr! That makes sense! I knew there had to be a reason why I saw all these hardtails on here. What do you mean by high volume tires? Like bigger ones?

I have ALL the backpacking gear, I have a bike (tire pump, extra tubes, bike tools, etc), I just got a Bikefisherman, which I highly recommend if you fish. I see a lot of bikepacking type of accessories on here. Any other suggestions on what I'd need for the bike?

Yep, high volume - is bigger, wider, tires. Like 2.4, for example. Or what maximum you can fit. The only drawback is bigger rolling resistance. So try what you've got first. Depends on terrain you're planning to ride.
I'm pretty new to bikepacking too. Just like the idea of going by bike further and faster then hiking.
Happy riding Smiley
