For quite some time it's been possible to create custom mapsets for Garmin units.  It is not straightforward and the methods I've seen make use of several tools to get it done - so I haven't tried.  Topo USA has been good enough.

I just discovered there is a load of free map data available online.  The maps are Garmin compatible, higher resolution (24k), and  include land ownership layers.  I just downloaded and installed the Utah Topo maps - they look super, integrated with MapSource without a hitch, and uploaded to the GPS (Oregon) also without a hitch.

http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/ is where to begin.  Enjoy Smiley

Nice.  Yep, those basemaps are definitely more detailed and perhaps best of all, free!  I've used the Arizona maps on and off and found some errors in road/trail placement, enough that I kind of gave up on it for a while.  I think they have improved things lately.  GPSfiledepot has a nice collection now, including links to the 'miscjunk' site, too.

I think I will have another look.  Let us know what you think of the Utah maps once you have some time 'in the field' with them.

DaveH- thanks,  that made the MapSource map look much nicer.  North Carolina seems fairly accuraate, although there's essentially no trails on it at all.
