I did see a lefty mounted, side driven dyno a while back, but reading the specs it was not overly efficient.

You might try calling Peter White Cycles. He may have a solution for you. Seems pretty much to know everything about this stuff

Don't dismiss modern bottle dynamos, they're a lot better than those our fathers used to ride with, e.g. http://www.dutchbikebits.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=40&product_id=65

I haven't seen a true lefty one yet, but I know that they make dynamos for recumbent trikes, and the mounting is somewhat similar in a lot of respects, so it should be possible.
