I have searched bikepacking.net far and wide for reviews or discussions on bug bivys to no avail which brings up my very first post.  I am just now getting into bikepacking, most of which will be via mountain bike on trails near my home in South Carolina and possibly North Carolina and Georgia as well.  Summers in the Deep South are usually quite hot and humid and insects (especially ticks and mosquitoes) can be a real problem.  Seems to me that a bug bivy would be ideal for my use because in addition to keeping insects at bay, the condensation problem that seems to plague the enclosed type is eliminated.  On top of that, I find sleeping under the stars during mild weather quite appealing.  I am also thinking of combining this type of bivy bag with a tarp which would mostly be used during rainy weather.  During cooler weather I would have the option of using the tarp like a tent fly by positioning it low and close to the top of the bag.  Several companies offer bivy bags and I believe the one from Marmot would be the way to go.  I have looked at several tarps and the Noah's Tarp from Kelty seems to be a good design although a few ounces heavier than it should be.  Am I on track or way off base?

If all you want is the bug protection and you're not worried about the water protection, I'd recommend looking at the Outdoor Research Bug Bivy.  You can find them at retailers and usually can find some on ebay.

The Marmot bivy/Kelty set-up are a good combo and should work well for your area.  The bivy has quite a bit of space for it's weight and offers splash protection.  The Kelty tarp is a nice design although a bit heavy.  You could save a pound and a half or more by going with a lightweight bivy like the SMD Meteor and a silnylon tarp but the cost would go up without any real gain in performance.
