I'm heading down to the Moab area for 4 days next weekend with no plans.

Think I got my gps data sorted out, but I'm wondering what maps to pick up. Right now I'm looking at getting the Lat 40 or Trails Illustrated ones. Any recommendations?

I've never been down there before. Any recommendations on rides? Might do one overnight on the bike.

The Lat 40 maps will get the job done.  If it’s your 1st time to Moab plan on ½ to 1 full day for the classic Slickrock area.

After the almost mandatory slickrock area for 1st timers there is so much to choose from--I would talk to some of the locals –they can direct you to the ‘type’ riding you want to do combined with what the real time weather will or will not allow.

for a overnight pick a route that will let you camp at lower elevation--note: sand and rain without a tarp is a pain from a 'camping' point of view

Casey,
I find the Trails Illustrated to be a little easier to read. The scale is a little better but then the Lat 40 do cover more territory so you could get by with only one map. If you can swing a permit at this late date White Rim trail in Canyonlands NP is a great overnighter.  1/2 day on Slickrock and full on Porcupine Rim would round out my perfect 4 days in Moab.
Enjoy

"Above and Beyond Slickrock" is a great book to pick up. It has all the great Moab area rides in it. You can pick up about any map you want at the visitor center in the middle of town on the main drag too.

I find the Latitude 40 maps much more detailed and up to date.

If you can wait until you get to Moab, buying maps at a local shop will give you an opportunity to get personal recommendations on what you might like to ride (Although Moab shops will happily give you recommendations even if you didn't buy something). Seeing as most Moab shop employees deal with visitors all day, it's a really good way to get recommendations. This site has better contributors than others, but internet recommendations are not always best for a given rider.

I have always liked the Above and Beyond Slickrock guidebook. It was written in the late 80's I think. Lot's of great historical and geological information there, but most of the rides highlighted and their descriptions are very out of date.

Good luck with your trip,

FW
