well that bike is out of stock so i'm back to looking.i'm not much of a biker yet, mostly road and only about 1000 mi. a year but i have the ultralite backing dialed in pretty good and i want to try the divide this summer but i need a bike to start building my kit around. i have read that al.frames ride harsh,ti.is expensive and steel is heavy. i am hoping their are some bikepackers out there that are willing to help point an old newbie down the right path.thanks in advance for anyone taking the time to share their thoughts

I don't care what the frame material is , I like them all . Wheels and tires preasure are more imporant in how it rides . It is all about how the bike fits on a long ride. What ever you get its got to fit you and your riding style.

I ride a Motobecane team fly ti 29er I've bikepacked several overnights in Colorado and 3 weeks on the GDR and Continental Divide trail in NM with it and had no problems I think it would do well on a complete Great Divide ride Tony

that bike as well as many outhers seem to have no way to mount a rack,so are you able to get all your stuff in a frame pack, seat pack, straped to handle bars or did you need to ware a pack or pull a trailer? as for fit, hard with a mail order bike,i can get my stand over hight but is there more to it than that? "frame is not so importain its wheels and tire presure" what does that mean? thanks again for any help

If i did a blind fold ride test of frame materials I don't think I could tell what the frame material was . Wheels the number of spokes and size tire and pressure have a big impact on ride quality. I ride a 17" to 19 " depended on the frame dimensions. So get a good fitting bike with durable bits that you like to ride. Lots of fun.
Good luck and happy new year Thom

Bear grass, You are right- no braze ons for racks. I travel very light. My kit weighs 13 pounds before food and water. I use as seat bag, frame bag, strap a tarp to the bars and wear a small backpack. Tony

I rode a 26" Motobecane for the 2012 TDR and had no problems at all with the bike beyond expected wear and tear. The only upgrades I would recommend is to the bottom bracket. For 2013 I'm upgrading mine with a Hope (and using a new 29er Motobecane). I have photos of the bike at www.tri-duffer.com.
