Does a Spot need to be outside of any packs on my bike? I had originally planned to just keep it in my handlebar bag. What are people using to mound them? The so-called RAM mounts seem like overkill. I was hoping to just velcro it to something. And of course, I will ensure it is facing the sky.

I attach mine to the outside and on top of my backpack. I dont like the blinky lights in my sight while riding. Placing it inside the bag will cause poor signal and may miss a few check in messages.

I put mine in a little pouch (from Wingnut) which is attached to top of my shoulder strap. Seems to work well, as it faces up when I'm riding or walking. I like having it attached to my body, as it's not difficult to imagine emergency situations where my bike would be hard to reach.

Do these devices have an obvious antenna that should be left unblocked by any carry case one might devise? Thanks in advance ...I don't actually have mine in hand yet.

No obvious antenna. The front side (with logo, buttons, lights) needs to face up.

The instructions say the units needs an unobstructed view of the sky. SPOT does make a case so you could either get that or try to duplicate it.
During some experimenting I have tried my SPOT Communicator inside the top of my pack and done fine YMMV.

I had a SPOT I stuffed in a mess pocket on the front of my bar bag. It worked OK. My understanding is the SPOT II has a better antenna... and maybe better signal transmission - but that is just talk among other users. I don't have any real data to correlate that theory.

The Wingnut pouch that carries my Spot has a mesh sleeve on top--and that's where I carry my Spot. Seems to work fine. I think that orientation is the most important factor, based on Spot's recommendation and my own testing. |

Cool. I just sewed on a mesh pocket on my Camelback specifically for my Spot 2. When riding my Spot will be facing up and seeing about 2/3 or more of the sky.

I have been using the spocket on top of my seat bag for the last week and it works great.
I'd be careful if you are using the stock Spot 2 case. Mine lasted for less then 24 hours of ride time before the belt loop gave way --thankfully I was using the extra clip it came with as well. Of course, those 24 hours were on some pretty rough terrain. I started with the spot attached to my bar bag, switched to my seat bag and finally just put it in my backpack. All three seemed to work equally well. The reason for all the switching was that I got some bad feedback from the homefront that no GPS data was being transmitted. This turned out to be a user error on my wife's part. |

Sorry to dig up an old topic, but I can't seem to find this answered anywhere.
I have a new Mr. Fusion 2 and a SPOT 3. I can't seem to find a way to make them play nice. On my last trip I ended up shoving the SPOT into the dry bag at the top, and just hoped it was still blinking. Has anyone come up with a good solution for mounting their SPOT on a bag that doesn't have a dedicated mesh pocket on top?

If the SPOT 3 comes with the little case you can slide some webbing though the case and then do a wrap of your bag. Tightens up the contents and holds the SPOT.

I have mixed feelings about the SPOT being on the bike. Generally mine is in the Revelate bag, but I also use it in a jersey pocket or Wingnut mesh pocket. If I end up needing it for an emergency and am away or thrown from the bike I kind of want it on my person...

I have a somewhat different goal with the SPOT. I have it tracking me live, and have a family member (or worried girlfriend) following me pretty closely online. If I fall off a cliff and stay motionless for a few hours without an OK message they'll get worried and come looking. I'm using it much more as a "where is he now" than a panic button. When possible I also try to avoid a backpack, though if I do have to, I guess I'll put the spot on the shoulder strap.

Back jersey pocket, or run a strap through that little case they gave you when you bought it, and around the bag, or through the bag straps? |
