I am loaded for a 4 day and night trip. I am not satisfied that I have 40 lbs of gear but I am not taking a bunch of unnecessary stuff except maybe my camp chair which maybe weighs 1.3 lbs soaking wet. I do have a full water bladder in my frame bag plus a 36 ounce growler in a handle bar bag. Clothes are minimal. I have long bontrager riding pants and a merino wool shirt in case evenings are cool. I also have 2 pairs of underwear and socks. I know my marmot trestle sleeping bag is pretty heavy and maybe I need a lighter sleeping bag. I opted to finally buy a Topeka rack cause I was tired of my bags swinging behind my seat. How goes my set up look?

Hey guys here's a good question. I've got a CamelBak Blowfish and I don't wear it much anymore. But when I do these trips I fill my water bladder up and I throw it in my frame bag and let the hose be attached to my Jones bars. How many of you would rather wear your water bladder on your back versus packing it in your bike?

Looks like a lot of your weight is on the left side. Stove, bag on the back and growler. I'd try to even that out. Looks like getting something to balance out the rear would work well. I wonder if you could get the yellow and brown bags from the rear to the front and the sleeping bag on the rear rack? That might get more weight in the middle of the bike.
BTW - what is the bag on the downtube? Is that the beer carrier (maybe by Jpaks?). I'm looking for a bag for my tent poles in the same spot.

That is a Down Under bag by broadfork bags. My wife bought it for me. It cost like $65 and is really well-made. I can get the sleeping bag on the rear rack. It's traps down nicely. But I think the combined weight of my yellow bag and my tent would be a couple pounds more than my sleeping bag so would it be worth putting that up under the handlebars? I thought you wanted less weight under the handlebars. However I'm going to agree with you I don't like how the bike looks so off balance. I like your idea I'm just not sure about the couple extra pounds under the handlebars

Maybe place the tent directly on top of the rear rack and then sleeping bag on top of that, I'd think when strapping down that the bag will conform (somewhat) to the tent. That might get thinks more lined up.
I happen to carry a fair amount of weight up front and at first it felt weird, but you eventually get used to it and I no longer have issues. Can even loft the front tire and bunny hop without much of a problem. I think the key is to get it strapped tight, where ever it resides.

Looks good with 2 exceptions. The brown bag on the side of the rack looks to be falling off already. Won't stay where it is. Try tying the back end to the yellow bag so it's notime just tied towards the front Might put your stove in a bag. If in multiple pieces wrap it in a rag to keep it from rattling Have fun. Good first effort. It gets easier with time!

Never mind how it looks, how does it ride? Four days is ideal for ditching a tent. A glass growler and camp chair? It's your recreation, but most agree that light is right. I would scrutinize your notion of a minimal setup, ditch the rack and get down to a normal seat pack. A bag made by anyone with a clue, packed well, will be stable. Tooling up properly costs money, no way around it, but it pays you back in the field. The important thing is to go, though. Have fun with it...

The rack though as far as ditching it I'm not sure I agree with. The rack is really nice because I can strap a couple bags on top that I would normally have strapped behind my seat and they are much more secure. I can still go minimalist and have the rack back there. But I realized a few things that I took on this trip that I probably won't take on the next one. Not sure where you got there glass growler from lol. It rode awesome BTW.

As long as you like it, it's a good setup! Each to her own, but I can't see running all those bags plus a rack on a four-day job. A large set of panniers on the rack would elim half the bags and the fork cargo. The sleeping bag does look monumental, and the lashed-on stuff not confidence inspiring. I'm all about run-what-ya-brung versus not going, but light is right if you can part with the coin. Here's a 4-day setup that ripped: Small front drybag Hbar/stem flat bag Small top tube bag Small seat bag Small frame bag (re-purposed top tube bag) 27l pack almost empty, for my bladder, pad, day clothes, ferrying beer Again, as long as you like it, it's a good setup!

Yeah the sleeping bag is not a down bag so it doesn't pack up as small
