Hey All, I'm heading out to do the Trans-WI route in 2 days, and this is my first attempt to use a GPS for "backcountry" navigation (have used them for ecological field work in the past).  I am using a Garmin Oregon 450 with my Mac running the BaseCamp software.

I have created routes on MapMyRide.com and downloaded the "official" Trans-WI route from EveryTrail.  I have gotten as far as figuring out how to convert the tracks to routes and then load the routes on the device.  My problem is that it seems that the routes have WAY too many waypoints (every 33ft!) and this is making it hard for the Oregon to load the routes.  Does anyone know how I can simplify the routes so that things will run more smoothly?

Well I am no expert on the Oregon but in my experience with the Garmin Etrex line you don't want to convert the track to a route. But rather load the track into the track file. Then it doesn't come up as a bunch of waypoints but rather a continuous line. Just a guess that it's not a waypoint every 33ft but a track point. Every 33ft seems like a nice tight track.

Hope that helps maybe somebody else can make more sense out of describing the process.

Thanks, that has helped, though I don't think its quite the solution, I can now at least see the routes on my GPS (still a lot of silly little flag and mountain icons along the route).

What I am looking to do, I think is called "simplifying" the route.  I read somewhere that the Basecamp software can do it, but I can't figure out where you set that up.

I'd be interested in the answer to this also. I know there is a simplify algorithm included in topofusion however it doesn't run on Macs Sad

I'd like to try out topo fusion too... that would probably solve all my problems... almost enough to want to load Windows via Boot Camp, but that would just make my MacBook dirty.

Well, don't normally use BaseCamp, but here is the solution.

Load your track into BaseCamp and select it.  May help to have the track properties window open, just so you can see how many points are in the current track.

Next, go to the Edit menu (or right-click the track in the library sidebar), then select Advanced, then Filter Selected Track.

From the Filter Track window, leave the filter at Entire Track. Then select Maximum Points in the filter by options.  Then, simply enter the maximum number of points you want to have in the track (the number of points will be something less than the number you enter).

After the track is filtered, simply save (Export) the updated track.  Doing this will update your original .gpx or .gdb file.  If you don't export it, the changes only show up in the BaseCamp library file, not the original .gpx or .gdb track file.

This looks to also be something you can only do on a PC Sad

Talked to Garmin support today, what they said was to DL the route from an older version of MapMyRide so it won't DL so many points in the track.  We'll see how it goes

Might be a silly ? but did you delete all of the original stuff.

PITA with garmin stuff is that you have to delete things one piece at a time.

Topofusion is a great program.

I also don't use TopoFusion because I use a Mac.

I use GPSBabel to shrink my gps files (and all sorts of other manipulations too).  It's free and runs on most any OS.

In the "Translation Options" section open up "Filters".  You can filter Waypoints to drop those that are less than N meters apart.  And you can simplify Routes and Tracks to Limit to N data points.  Where N is user specified number.

off topic, but I wrote up my initial experiences with a Garmin etrex for bike touring here:
