hey all...what type of needle and thread can be used to sew up a torn sidewall? where can you get them?

Upholstery thread and needles are good. Google them on Amazon.com, or stop by any fabric store.

It's easiest with a curved needle, it enables you to push the needle through one side of the tear and then back through the other side of it without having to pull the needle all the way through first (does that make sense?).  This can save you taking the tyre of the rim too, depending on whereabouts the tear is.
