After a recent derailleur hanger incident, I'm, uh, reviewing my selection of spares to carry. Most of them reflect some past incident Smiley

Currently, I'm at:
  • spokes
  • tubes
  • gear cable
  • chain powerlinks
  • allen bolts
  • derailleur hanger

What am I missing? Cleats? Brake cable? My bike is a cyclocross with Tiagra STI shifters btw.

1 extra cleat.
5 chain links.
Spare front/rear brake pads.
Tire Boots.
Zip Ties.
I also carry an extra chain ring because I'm on a 1x10.

Looks like a good list. A spoke nipple or two to go with the spokes wouldn't be a bad idea either.

And possibly brake pads, for a long trip. A friend recently ran out of brake pads during a long bash through Vietnam and China. The results were pretty hideous: hundreds of kilometres where every hill had to be walked down.

Might add a seat clamp.

They break? Hmm. Can you fudge a repair with duct tape?

There was a famous story I recall from my 4x4 days: This guy was travelling through the desert in his big, heavily modified Landcruiser 4x4, along with the other spares he carried, he carried a fullsized spare rear differential - in case he broke the one under the rig. Now, a rhetorical question - would he have busted a diff in the first place if he didn't have such a heavy load of spares?

I have a few different spares lists, depending on where I go and the trip length.

Apart from the norm:
section of chain and links/pins
Bolts and washers M4 M5 M6
chainring bolts
metre or two of nylon coated fishing tracer

Err, what's nylon coated fishing tracer, and what do you use it for?
