I was thinking about getting some xtr brakes. Some guys on the web are saying they broke their xtr brake levers. What about Magura? I don't know. What am I going to do? I have been reading the ^^Carrying a bike via a backpack^^ thread. I want to make my bicycle lighter and more reliable so I can get lost in the woods, and carry it without getting ranger Rex all upset, or stressing my poor tired back. I had a thought about doing an entire trail instead of taking bike detours. So, I think I will upgrade a couple of parts first. My two sets of bb7s are eight years old or so. I've used the old Shimano XT's (785's) for almost 5 years. Aside from 1 warrantied lever the day before my first AZT I had zero issues with them. I just got a pair of the new 8000 XT's 2 weeks ago. Hoping I can get the same usage out of them. Apparently the lever issue many had with earlier 8000's has been resolved. Not super duper race light but reliable for races/trips all over the world. My recommendation.

Yea, the last brake thread I read here, a few years ago, they wanted xt brakes. reliable for races/trips all over the world. My recommendation.
I wont be doing any Racing. I am thinking of ways to get further away from everyone else. |

I've had lots of problems with Magura MT5's (always rubbing, leaking leaver, hard to get brake pads). Since then happy with my XT's.

With the exception of our mountain tandem, I run BB7's on all of my bikepacking bikes. All I take are a couple of pairs of spare pads and a cable in case I have an issue. I'm not sure if brakes are a good place to lose weight or not.

XT's for me! Used to be a big fan of BB-7's but once you try a good hydraulic it is hard to go back. World tour or where repair is tough then either rim brakes or mechanicals.
The powerful one finger braking is intoxicating.

The XT's are better because the XTR's are a little too light.
The most reliability hydraulic brakes on mountain bikes are XT, it's been like this for the last few years

Shimano brake accessories seem to be about the most likely brand to be in stock at a shop. How often do you see Royal Blood on shelves? That reason alone puts me in the Shimano camp.
I have XTR M988 with several years on them, and a newer XT set. Both unfailingly reliable performers, and easy to bleed.

Slx hydros for me and I don't think you can beat them. Exactly what he says.....1 finger braking is awesome. |
