Northwave is a team shoe sponsor for Topeak-Ergon, so I had to choose what was available to me (the +/- of sponsorships). I was on LAKE a few years back....and liked their product...but as you said, heavy.
The last 2 years we have been on Northwave, and they actually have a pretty slick little shoe for the bikepacking: Northwave Touring (

- It's lightweight
- No mechanical buckles or straps (this is something I was wanting for CTR)
- Great for hiking/walking
- Sole is stiff...but also flexable
- Durability looks good so far with all my CTR specific training
- $$$ is inexpensive (just under $100)
- Rubber sole has good grip...but not super aggressive like 'most' mtb shoes. I have been on mud, rocks, wet rocks, roots, etc.....with no issues.
