GPS/Etrex 20 question

Rode the KT last week following a track that I downloaded from this site- first time doing so.
When I would open the track on the Etrex 20 it showed "me" (small blue triangle) on the track from a very distant, or "zoomed-out" view.
When I would try to "zoom-in" using the arrow buttons the device would zoom in, but not on "me". I would be now out of the screen, and spend a ton of time scrolling around with the joy stick trying to see a piece of the track somewhere, and then follow it back to where I knew I was on the track. If I then tried to zoom-in a little closer- same issue.
The tracks I have drawn myself in TF for the rides near home have never done this. I can zoom in and out, and my location stays right in the screen on the device.
Does anyone have any notion as to why this was happening? It was a real pain in the butt, and very time consuming trying to scroll all over with the joy stick.
I currently have no base maps loaded into the Etrex- have been practicing on local rides with just seeing how i like following the triangle. I believe the KT I downloaded (Mr. Gadd's I believe) had a base map "in" it. Would this cause these issues?
Thanks, bd
