I'm looking for some advise for a smartphone app for following an gpx route with offline mapping data, preferably a free one!
I've perviously used a garmin 810 with a uploaded gpx and then use maps me for offline mapping but I would like to have one app that does both functions.
I'm not great with tech and just want a simple app, any suggestions?

If you're in iPhone world you might look at Gaia GPS. You'd need to pay to get offline mapping. While there is an Android version, I think the app works best in iOS.

GPS Essentials let's you download maps for offline use and is a great tool. Of course it also helps to have an Android with a big micro-sd card so you can download lots of them as they take up space. The app let's you set how much offline storage space you want to use for maps and gives different map options like OSM etc.
Google Maps also allows you to download chunks for offline use, but doesn't have great GPS functionality except to show where you are now. Still better than no maps at all.

I am using Lokus. You can download third-party cards, at registration 3 cards are given free of charge, the rest are not expensive. You can upload your own. A very convenient application and very functional.

Been using OsmAnd. Has loads of user options, so a bit of a learning curve.
I use it offline both when biking and when kayaking. I really like that it has different profiles for things like driving/boating/biking/hiking, lets me use the same app for everything. I can even move maps, profile settings, etc from one device to another, no need to do the setup again on another device. I use it on two, one that's waterproof for kayaking and my daily use one.
The only thing I don't like about it is that I don't find it any good for locating biz or residential addresses.
