Folks, I'm a long-time listener, first-time caller...
My two buddies and I do a several-day bikepacking trip, usually relying on hotels and restaurants/grocery stores. Past trips: St. Paul to Chicago, K.C. to St Louis via Katy Trail, and Pittsburgh to D.C. on Allegheny/Gap trails.
We have a trip scheduled for late May from roughly Indianapolis to Pittsburgh to follow the Great American Rail Trail.
What is everyone's thoughts about taking on a trip like this during the pandemic? The three of us would probably be at risk spreading it to each other, but I think we could be socially distant from others. But we will also be away from our local heath care facilities. Conundrum: it is at once the best times and the worst times to do some long distance biking.
Thoughts?

Thoughts, it will depend on how things play out in states that are reopening. One guy from Tucson tried to ride the AZT when things first started shutting down. Gave up after the first 300 miles. Store's were open but he couldn't go in, tried to get a room in a small town after 5 minutes of interrogation he was turned away. No doubt businesses will want to open but will they feel safe to do so. Small town shop owners may welcome outsiders but will locals. Maybe figure out something that you can do without resupply then at least you have a backup plan.

Yeah, the food and lodging thing could be tricky. Here in Minnesota, campgrounds are closed for now. So even tenting might be a challenge. But I wonder about piecing together links between larger cities with more services. Ugh! What a great time to bike. What a terrible time to bike.

I forget what its like in farm country, grew up in Sioux Falls so I am familiar. Moved to AZ in the 90s and never looked back. We have so much public land here, state and federal, even the biggest cattle operations are on mostly public land that we can access. Hopefully things will settle down and you can just do what you had planned on originally. For me the big bikepacking event is the AZTr, I don't race anymore but enjoy being involved by shuttling others. This year its moved to October so there's still a good chance it will happen.
