I got one of the 20 tooth steel chainrings from a EBay vendor; wondering if others have mounted this chainring on to a Shimano XT crank.  How much did you have to file from the chainring mounting posts?  Whats the best way to do this, file or grinder?  Any info would be great.

I did this to an LX crankset- essentially the same. I found a file to work best. The metal is pretty soft so it goes quick and easy. Put the chain on there and mark where you need to file (don't forget to file the bolt heads too). Try it out after filing some and see if you've taken off enough or not. This was a very worthwhile mod, I love the lower gear.
