After following this years Tour Divide I'm all wound up to ride (not race) the Divide in 2016. I'm planning to get a new bike and my price range has me in the SLX grouping. I've always had XTR or XT in the past and have zero complaints, and I don't want to mess up a good thing. Is there much of a reliability difference or mostly performance and weight difference? What about SRAM?

I would say reliabilty is the same throughout. Weight and only maybe preformance differ. Brake levers and shifters have a better feel but all work acceptably. Be more concerned about fit and comfort. Be really certain of your saddle. Grips ,bar width and sweep. 2700 miles is a long way and a lot of saddle time. Comfort is all.

I've ridden and raced DH on Six aswell as Xtr and Saint stuff. With regards to reliability I wouldn't worry. It's strong and standard shimano quality. The only difference is in the weight tbh. I only have Saint and xtr because I'm a biketart.

I'm fine with SRAM or Shimano. I use them interchangeably on various bikes and never really notice the difference. SLX parts are great. I wouldn't hesitate to use them.

I used Shimano components for over ten years, and bought my first sram outfitted bike last year. I'm really happy with the sram components. My bike has mostly X9 and some X7 components on it and they've been flawless so far.
