I'm looking to buy my first quilt after many years of sleeping bag usage. Can I get a reasonably priced recommendation for spring/fall Midwestern usage?

Not a problem. Every once in a while some used quilts come up in the classifieds here. I'm not too familiar with all the latest and greatest but there are a few companies making reasonably priced new gear out there... I think that my 2 Katabatic quilts are some of the nicest gear i have ever used. I have also spent my adult life in the outdoor biz so i have seen a lot of gear. One great resource for used lightweight gear are the classifieds at backpackinglight.com

Read as much as you can before ordering. Bikepacking.com, Backpackinglight, Reddit etc. Some brands are notorious for over-estimating the warmth ratings, there are different baffle and strap designs to consider as well. I bought an Enlightened Equipment summer quilt a few seasons ago. Workmanship is very good but I don't think the temperature rating is as "accurate" as those from some other brands. Nunatak and Katabatic consistently get good reviews on the hiking websites.
With all of these you get what you pay for; I dont think there are any economical options out there unless you're looking for summer weight. And be prepared to wait as many of these companies work build-to-order. I think I waited longer for my quilt than my titanium road bike!

Enlightened Equipment is the best bang for your buck, but like Bobonli said, they are a bit optimistic with their temperature ratings. You can often find a pretty good deal on a used quilt over at the backpackinglight gear swap forum.

I use Outdoor Vitals quilts and have good success. I recently picked up a 20degree quilt of theirs to match the 30 degree one that I already have. That way when my wife and I are out bikepacking, we can put the heavier or lighter side up depending on the weather. We also use a pad.
