I’m currently using a SON Schmidt hub and a Sinewave Beacon for my dynamo light setup. I was using a Goal Zero Venture 30 for my cache battery, but it seems the battery doesn’t play well with the dynamo. Does anyone have a cache battery they recommend?

I use the Jackery Mini
It's ~$13 on Amazon. Contrary to the description, the black has the same capacity as the more expensive orange model.
It allows pass through charging so you can charge it while you discharge it. The capacity might seem anemic at 3350mah, but it's honestly rated and even that small size would take close to a full day of pedaling to fill it.

+1 on Jackery. Can't recall which one I got but it had more capacity than the mini. I figure I should start off with more capacity in case its needed. Can always charge it at a resupply or at a motel if needed. And yeah, less than $20.

I hear ya. The dream would be a 5000 mah model with no frills (flashlights, integrated cords).
My plan is to double up on the Mini for long trips. I have a black and orange.
They're the only reputable brand I know of that incorporates the pass through charging feature. Anker discontinued it on all of their chargers.

It looks like they discontinued the Jackery Mini. Still recommend it?

Yeah. I saw that. The mini and a few other models.
I put an email in to them a couple days ago to see if they're discontinuing or refreshing. A refresh with slightly higher capacity would be a win. I haven't heard back yet.
All the more reason to pick one up now, I'd say.

Some batteries require quite a high input voltage to overcome their internal resistance and bike dynamos don't quite have enough. It's a bit hit and miss as to which battery/dynamo combinations work, though many do. Regarding pass-through, there's a post on RavPower's site about this http://blog.ravpower.com/2017/10/danger-and-damage-of-pass-through-technology-for-batteries/ The takeaway is that you should do it as little as possible. |

Yes. The assumption there though, is that it's being charged from mains. I think heat is much less of a concern with the trickle charge that dynamo presents.
