Hi, Being a brit i would like some advice on how u go about getting from Antelope Wells to the nearest airport and would be interested to hear from other brits on how they managed to get home i.e. flights- did u book a return ticket when you flew to calgary ? and got an internal flight from new mexico back to calgary ? Any help would be great  |

Hi,
I am going to attempt the TD in 2014. I live in Phoenix which is about 5 easy hours from Antelope Wells. I will simply phone my wifey when I feel I'm about 6-7 hours out and wait for her arrival. Drive home and it's over. If I have anyone around me at that point, I would figure a ride to Phoenix to be a no brainer. Most flights to anywhere from New Mexico will probably go thru PHX.

You can also fly out of Las Cruces, NM to the east. Not as big a hub as Phoenix, of course (and you might actually end up going through PHX) but it is closer to get to. For people driving up toward Albuquerque, they will head to Las Cruces to get to I-25.

Hi Terry, I got a lift to El Paso and flew home to LHR via Ft Worth Dallas. Booked BA to Canada and return from El Paso, they take bikes foc on the way out, $150 return. The main thing is the ease and $100 + ticket difference cost of flight changes if anything stops you getting to AW, compared to budget airlines that were inflexible. About £950 booked a month before the GD. There's a good hotel right next to El Paso airport with a $10 breakfast buffet that I took full advantage of. A pool there too. You could look up the Payne brothers for a $1 a mile ride from AW, or post around and maybe find a lift from a kind soul who'll take pity on you : )

Can i pick your brains about a few other logistical choices and would be interested in what kit u took- what worked what didn't etc, ive also a few bike specific questions as well......
Any help is mucho appreciated

I hired a guy named Mike who lives in Silver City to come and pick me up. He brought (unasked, so even more cool) a bike box and then drove me to El Paso. It cost something like $100 and I gave him a tip. He shouldn't be hard to find as his normal job is running to and from Silver City to various cities in the area.

Terry, I flew out from the UK to YYC, did about 10 days training locally, rode to AW and was so very lucky to get a lift to Pheonix by an amazingly kind family of a fellow rider who finished within a few hours of me. I already had a flight booked from PHX with West Jet. I allowed 2 days to get to PHX (didn't need it) and West Jet couldn't have been more helpful in bringing my flight forward for no charge. I don't recall the price for carrying a bike, but it was reasonable, and there are a couple of bike shops near the airport so getting a box and zipties and sticky tape is pretty easy.
Chilled in Calgary and went to the Stampede, caught the plane back to the UK and plan to repeat the whole experience in 2014 but maybe with a little less use of snowshoes.

For those who aren't on a tight timetable, what about going from Antelope Wells to Douglas, AZ via the Geronimo Trail? And then on to Tucson to catch a way home, etc. I saw this idea floated here: https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/page/?o=1&page_id=310078&v=3M I don't believe anyone has tried it yet, but looking at Google Maps this seems like a possibility of riding more dirt roads most of the way back to Tucson. |

That is interesting. Problem is, when you leave AW you drop into the real "desert" climes. In July, in Tucson, 105-112 is pretty common. That is some serious heat to contend with. I was joking with my wife when we talked about her picking me up. "Heck, I'll just ride on home from AW to Phoenix"........blank stare |
