Ive been using messenger bags and backpacks for several years, and a few months ago I thought I'd give a rack/pannier setup a try on my commuter.  While it was nice having nothing on my back in a Tucson summer, I absolutely hated the way it made my bike handle.  To be fair, it's probably not the best bike for a rack/pannier (specialized langster).  I didn't have a gps at the time so I can't prove it, but it made me feel much much slower, too.  I'm thinking about getting a big Revelate seatbag for commuting but I'm worried that it might feel really similar to a rack and pannier.  Is there anyone here with experience commuting with one of these who can give me some insight into how it changes the handling?

I should add that I plan on buying a geared cross bike soon for commuting and big rides, and I'm sure that would make a difference.

What do you plan on carrying? Change of clothes? Lunch?
I run mine on my road bike for short rides and loaded for camping... works great.

Langsters are just twitchy... if you get a cross bike you will be fine with the seat bag or rack/panniers.

I use my CDW seatbag for commuting everyday.  I don't have to bring a laptop or anything, just a change of clothes and my lunch.  I keep shower stuff at work and whenever I drive it (at least once a week) I bring extra clothes/swap out old clothes and extra pair of brown and black shoes.  It works perfect for me.  I don't think it changes anything in how the bike handles, just weighs it down.

I usually carry the usual bike tools, phone, change of clothes, lunch, and sometimes a few books (not textbooks) or video games/dvds.  It's good to hear that it doesn't affect handling too much, though I might be screwed either way with the Langster.  I really don't mind riding with a backpack or messenger bag in the winter, but it blows in the summer here.

I may as well just order one.  If it's uncomfortable on the Langster, at least it would still be usuable for long rides/bikepacking on a mountain bike.

You need lots of seatpost room for the seatbag. It seems to be meant for mountain bikes that have a more sloped top tube than even compact road frames like the langster.

I run mine on an Indy Fab club racer and previously on my cross check. I had Eric shorten the seatpost wrap by 1/2" or so. I think he makes a 'road' and 'cross' version now.

Clearance to the tire is key...

I have the CDW escape pod, which i use on my x-check, for commuting/living/surviving without a car.  To your question, absolutely the bag (Revelate or CDW) can, and should be used for commuting purposes.  I'm able to pack a pair of shoes (size 13), change of clothes, small selection of tools, a tube and still have room to spare if need be.
