I've been kicking around the idea of an internally geared hub for bike packing, but am not sure if the weight is worth it.  I tried doing a search, but did not come up with much.  I imagine others have tried or at least, contemplated one.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Have not done much bikepacking but when I ran my Rohloff on my 29er I loved it for all riding year round in the south.  Waiting for phil wood to bring their hubshell to market to run it again on my new ride.  I was drawn to the maintenance and simplicity of running SS but with a wide range of gears.  Got mine used on ebay and had Cyclemonkey do an overhaul on it a couple months later to make sure it was running smoothly.  Zero issues with it for 2 years.

I believe racers have used just about every IGH out there for the Tour Divide so there should be some input out there somewhere.  I know I've seen Rohloffs (search MTBR for a build report on that one) and Alfines, but I'm sure there are others out there too.  If you can spare the expense I think it's hard to beat.  My bike has never been my limiting factor so a few lbs of penalty at the hub doesn't seem to affect me much.

I've used an Rohloff IGH on the GDMBR (Banff to Abiquiu), with a Campagnolo Record C9 chain. I've tensioned the chain once, took less then 10 minutes. I meet a racer around Canon Plaza, he had replaced the chain twice; which takes some time too.

I'm interested in going to one of these set-ups as well but the word on the street is the Alfine 11 has bad juju....the 8 seems quite robust for on and off road but it seems everyday I read a new report of someone who's 11 imploded on them.  Its a bit of a bummer because I'm not sure the 8 would be enough for the on/off road touring I'm looking at it for.....the 11 would have been perfect, but now I'm hoping to find a nice used Rohloff.
