Hello Bikepackers,

My wife and I are interested in riding the Great Divide route at a casual pace next summer, but my wife is worried about the trail conditions and using her 26" Surly LHT for the trip. Would you recommend a hardtail or full suspension bike for an experienced bicycle tourist but novice and cautious mountain biker?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick, my partner and I toured the GDMBR in 2009, it is awesome!
A 26 LHT will be perfect. We used 26 hardtails but you don't really need shocks. There is plenty of washboard but at a touring pace this wasn't a problem.
We rode with someone on a 26 LHT and he was loving it.
It's not really about the bike, I know that's a cliche but it is true.
Just do it and enjoy!!
Cheers from New Zealand, Scott

Just put wide tires on it and you should be good to go. Although, last year when i rode it ,everyone I saw had a mountain bike.
