Hey all! I'm building a bikepacking rig for an extended South America trip and need some help with my fit.
Currently I am running moustache bars on a Surly Troll frame, but my saddle height is about 4 inches higher than the flats of my bars and I feel very hunched over when I am in the drops.
I am seriously considering switching to a 100mm (~4 inch) riser bar. I already swapped out the stem to something with more rise but it wasn't enough. My legs are pretty long.
What are the Pros vs. Cons of having such aggressive rise? How do I decide on the width of my bars?

It almost sounds like the bike is too small. No harm in having a high rise stem tihat I am aware of. Getting comfortable is of utmost importance with long days in the saddle. Titec h bars come with some rise. With a 45 degree sweep your hands will move back and your back will come up. As far as width, if it is more of a dirt road or road tour juat get something that feels right. Post up a pic of yourself on your bike and it will be easier to constuctively comment

The bike is a 22" XL so no larger size available...
I picked up one of those blasted steer tube extenders today to see if I could fake the geometry. I was told by my shop tech that the only reason a steer tube extender would be bad is if it makes the stem higher above the headtube than the headtube is long. Sound right? The stem is now mounted the same height above the headtube as the headtube is long, so to his logic it should be fine.
Riding with the extra 75mm rise makes my bike feel like a dream all of a sudden. Is this a much less ideal fix than a riser bar?

I am not sure if an extender is made for off road use. Only used one on my wifes road bike. Take it out on your local singletrack and make sure it stays tight. Don't want the headset loosening. I am temptedto say it is not as good a fit, but for $20 you know your bike can be made to work for you.

You can always consider the Surly Ogre which has a 24" size
