In order to finish my Fargo build I ended up using a crankset I had in the parts box.  It uses a square taper BB.  What is everyone else using?
I just had to snug the BB the other day after about 200 miles on the bike.  Anybody have a preference or a story about why they use an internal or external vs the other?  I have a outboard on the tour bike and have never had any issues with it at all.  I just need to get the funds together for the 2 piece crankset.

I use an external.  I have had many problems with internal bottom brackets.   First, I've managed to somehow rattle the crankarms off easily, and lost the bolt off an embankment of leaves and poison ivy.   I've also rounded out the splines on several isis brackets from having a lil play in the arms.  I've ovalized a few and created some dead spots in it.

If the external bearings jam up, the crankarms will still spin.  It's easier to remove external bottom brackets and clean, replace, and relube particularly if you got a chrisking....back to lawn mowing...

Haven't had an internal BB on a bike since like 05. Can't think of any reason not to use a high quality one. Tho I will say I have had better luck with the external ones.

Had horrible luck with the external that came stock with my Fargo. The replacement seems fine (replaced the crank too).

Have run Phil and Shimano on my other bikes. The Phil square taper was on my brevet bike. Sent it back twice, finally sold it and put in a Shimano. No issues so far, probably 6k miles.

Had a Shimano on my fixed gear cross check fail. It worked itself out and bound up the crank. Swapped out the plastic for an older metal threaded insert and all was fine.

Killed the outboard on my single speed. It was stock with a Surly Mr. Whirly. Too much winter and slop riding.

So I'd guess I'm 50/50.

Ok thanks.  I am looking around for a used 2 piece crankset now.  I may just have to save my pennies and buy one.
I was lucky enough to be able to pickup a new un55, I think thats the number anyway.  I know I have the BB which does not have the plastic cup on the non crank side.  What was Shimano thinking plastic bearing cup really!!!

No issues with mine so far although I did just snug the crank side cup the other day.  Normal maintenence as far as I am concerned.  Thanks for the replies.

Pull the bottom bracket and wrap the threads on both sides with teflon (plumbers) tape and it will stop working loose.
