A little off base here but when I got my new GPS unit I did a lot of geocaching.  It really helped me quickly get familiar my new GPS toy, plus its fun.   It’s also a great way to turn a routine/local training ride into something new.

Check out http://www.geocaching.com for what I am talking about

Along this line I am seriously thinking of making up local (Colorado Springs area) self-timed Endurance Challenge. ie: some linked 25,50,100 mile mtb loops.  Each loop would include some fun geocaches as part of the challenge.

I think this is Mark, right?  Hopefully I answered some of your questions by email earlier today.

Pickup a cheap $12 card and then depending on where you live, there may be free maps you can load onto it.  Check out this thread:

If not, the Garmin Topo 2008 DVD is your best bet for US-wide coverage of topo maps.

Start riding, download your tracks and see what you learn.  Then try drawing a new track, uploading it to the unit and following it out 'in the field.'

Let me know if you have any more questions.
