Hey all,
Planning out my trip to the CT this summer with a few friends and just wondering what single speed gearing folks have used on the trail.
To be a little more specific, I will be riding my steel Jones with 2.4 Ardents, loaded (frame, bar, and saddle bags, an Osprey backpack and fairly UL gear) through sections 22-Durango. Planning on taking five days on-trail at a stop-and-smell-the-flowers pace. I don't mind HAB sections.
For gearing I was thinking 32x22 as its what I ride around here (Bay Area) and I like it a little more n the spinny side of things...
Any experienced folks out there feel like dishin' out some advice for a newbie to the CT?
Thanks! -Chris

No problemo - I've seen this duo speak before about their trips on the CTR with their single speed bikes.

Chris,
You should have an incredible time. The CT is pure awesome. However, be prepared for looking HAB that will test your patience and your feet. You may also want to reconsider your five day pace. Even for fast guys (which I am most definitely not), a smell the roses pace is likely slower than 5 days. Enjoy the ride!

The five day pace would be for sections 22-Durango. I wish I had the time off work to go for the whole thing! Someday....

I rode from Wager Gulch (somewhere on 22) to Durango in 2 days and it wasn't leisurely. Riding that in 5 days would require way too much food to haul around - you could backpack it on foot in 5 days, its not much over 100 miles. As for gearing, I spent a lot more time in the granny ring than in the middle ring - on most of the ups I'd want the little ring, and most of the downhills are steep enough you won't be pedaling anyway.... not that I'm a SS expert or anything.
