Not interested in "mid-fat" or small rear tire options, I am wondering what options folks have come across for plus size tires on a full wheel set (Back too) on a Fargo. Rather than purchasing a Surly ECR or Krampus, I'm hoping to only have to up my tire size. I read an interesting piece regarding 27.5 X 2.8" tires on a fargo, but seems like there's no conclusive take on this issue in the article (found here: http://twentynineinches.com/2014/09/02/wtb-trailblazer-27-5-x-2-8-tires-exclusive-b-review-intro-part-2/ ). Be sure to read the article prior to commenting on the "2.8 inches" piece... I'm putting a dynamo hub into the wheel set, so, I want it to last and not be too much of an experiment. Takes, opinions, and experiences from anyone? Biggest size you've put on your rear wheel? widest rim? From the above article, this is Guitar Ted's pic of his Fargo with 27.5's on it:

which fargo? a friend of mine is thinking about this very same thing... front should be easy, rear is the big question. with the alternator model you have a bit more room to play with. (and, FWIW, i moved to a Krampus for this reason, as well as for wanting a higher BB, and more 'mtb' feel) dyno up front on a rabbit hole. rohloff out back. Does it matter which Fargo due to width? or how low the cranks are?

If its a Gen 1 I don't think you'll get it in the front fork.
If its a Gen 2 the front should work with a Rabbit Hole / Knard. The rear is limited to probably going to a smaller rim size.
If its a Gen 3 with the alternator dropouts you have a *little* bit more wiggle room in the back because you can pull the alternators way back to gain some length at the BB.
And I do believe that the Rabbit Hole / Knards fit in the Firestarter fork.

I had the same question, and did some rough measurements with calipers on my Gen 2 Fargo. IIRC, I got 91mm front width, and -Edit- 78 mm rear. In short, I could easily run true 3" rubber on 50mm rims in the front, but the back will need something smaller. I am unwilling to drop the bottom bracket by running 650B+, so I am waiting until someone comes out with something in a true 2.5-2.6 inch width (on something like a P35).

Not sure if it helps or not, but I have the Racing Ralph's 2.4 (not the 2.35) on Rabbit Holes and that's the max that can fit in the rear on those rims.. It's not as fat as I wanted to go but I've been happy with it the last 2 years..

I have about 1" clearance on both of the bridges with 2.4" (true 2.1-2.2") continental mountain kings, so a 2.6" tire would leave around 0.5" clearance at the bridges. About the minimum I would want to run, unless I knew there was going to be bad, sticky mud.

Thanks for the take Mike. I agree. It's one of my big concerns, and why I wondered about the about article, and other's experience with it. A lower BB would nearly negate the benefit of wide tires with pedal strikes, etc. on the terrain a 3" tire would help on. hmmm... pity to have to buy a new bike just to run 3" tires... but I guess thats why the Krampus and ECR are popular. |

I totally agree. All the numbers I am throwing out there (2.6 inches and associated clearances) are for a 29er rim and tire. So, this would raise the bike, which is a positive in My book. |

Noob here, sorry to pipe in, but I have the same question as to wether the wtb trailblazers will fit in my Kona Explosif (27.5") frame? I measured just over 3" between the stays.
I'm convinced I want to turn this bike into a pack mule

Since I want to use the new wtb scraper i45 rim, perhaps if that tire won't work, I should be asking if running a 2.4" tire will work ok on that rim?
