Did some searching and haven't been able to find a solution yet. I'm looking for a smaller seatbag. Not as small as the tools/spare tube/cell phone carriers that are easily found, but not as big as those gorgeous customs by Revelate or CDW. I'm looking for something in the middle, ideal to use on a day trip without using a backpack. I'm hoping to find something to carry lunch, rain gear, and a few other small odds and ends.

Ortlieb, I used their medium and large. Here is a pic of the large ( lending it to a friend) Wil's Voodoo by mbeganyi, on Flickr

I've been having similar thoughts and have seen some of the bags that Ortlieb makes. They aren't as narrow at the nose and have a harsh corner for legs to rub on. I've actually been working on a a smaller than Revelate/CDW bag of my own. Send me a PM if you're interested.

I really like the Ortlieb seatbags, but I've been unable to get the mounts to fit my Selle An-Atomica saddle (same problem with Sci-Con and Topeak, too).

check this out... http://www.banjobrothers.com/products/seat-bags/waterproof-saddle-trunk/I have a couple of their smaller seat bags which are well put together. This one has a waterproof liner which I believe is removable. Depending on the size of your lunch, rain gear and odds and ends might work. Banjobros is a Minnesota company so their stuff is all over the Twin Cities where I live but I don't know how well distributed it is throughout the rest of the country. Very reasonable prices and they are very generous supporters of our local bike clubs. All that being said-I love my revelate viscacha and you can always cinch/roll it down to carry a smaller load;)

I was recently on a 4 day hut to hut tour where 2 of those banjo brothers bags failed at their straps and had to be fully strapped to the seat with extra webbing.

Thanks for the replies, will look into the Ortlieb and Banjo Bros offerings and see if we have a winner.

Personally- I have a Size Medium from Carousel and the way it compresses down on a small load is perfect for what you're talking about. I took mine on a solo day lap of the White Rim this Spring and it held a Down Jacket and Emergency bivy nice and tight....I wanted a little extra gear in case I had a serious mechanical and got stuck for the night...

I have 2 of the ortlieb bags and they are great but the mount to th rails of your seat can be a bit tricky with some saddles. If this is the case they make an optional strap you can buy (or easy to make) for alternative mounting. I have the large in the plus and the medium in classic fabric. If you can go for the plus fabric version it is much lighter and more durable.
I never have problems hitting my legs and used mainly on audax rides I use large more often as you can roll it down to almost the same size as the medium but it can hold way more. I've had both for s couple of years now can't remember where I got them but I purchased one for my dad from wiggle he used it for pbp this year and was really happy with it.
