I am trying to learn me some GPS. And I think of myself as fairly tech savvy, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to split a larger gpx into smaller ones so that I can load them onto my Oregon. I am using Basecamp on my Mac. I thought it was as simple as duplicating the file and then hitting the split track button.. say 500 out of 3000. Each time I do, however, all of the duplicates end up being 500 points while the other 2500 get deleted.
How do I carve up a large gpx file?
I hear it is really simple with Topofusion. You just indicate the number and go. I have a mac, so I have to use basecamp. It is frustrating because I am sure it isn't that complicated.
Can anyone point to a tutorial or give me advice on how to do this. Pretty please.
The long hand way to do this is:
Duplicate it / copy the route so you have a backup. Make sure you save the original somewhere.
Find your route, right click on it and 'Get Info'.
Locate Point 499 (or 500 or 1000 or whatever your GPS unit limit is)
Highlight and go down to the gear symbol.
'Split at Selected Point'
This will create a new route, it will have funny number after it (typically 001, 001-001, etc.)
Repeat on the newly created route. Note that the points will be renumbered in the newly created route of what you split off, so go look for that 499 (or whatever # again).
Repeat until you are done.
If you hide or move your original file, you should still see a full route on your screen, as each segment connects to the last.
