I saw a bag in REI the other day that is essentially a down quilt with some loops that hold the pad. The tag said something about being ultrlight for adv racers...  anywho I got to wondering if something like that wouldn't work well with a hammock but that wraps the whole hammock.  I have been trying to figure how to insulate well under me while keeping my load light.  If one could wrap a bag so that you are in the hammock and the bag goes under the hammock, over you and attaches to itself  on the side...wouldn't that be good?  I doubt that particular bag would be big enough...  but if it is small enough when stuffed, maybe two would still make more sense than a bag and a pad.

You're basically describing a hammock underquilt which seems to be the go-to for experienced hammockers.  Here's one example.  http://www.speerhammocks.com/Products/SnugFit.htm  If you really want to dive headfirst into hammock info overload visit hammockforum.net.
