Anyone ever do this?  I have the opportunity to do bikepacking rides like this.  I'm a mechanic at a bike shop that's at the base of the Santa Ana Mountains in Southern California.  A connecting trail at the bottom is only a 20 minute ride to work.  I've been thinking, since work starts at 10AM, if I was to wake up from camp at sunrise I'd be able to get in at least a 3 hour ride back down the mountain and end the ride at work, there's also a Gym less than a mile away from work that I have a membership to so I can shower right before work.

I'd either leave from work and climb at night using my lights, or leave early on my day off, do an epic ride during the day, camp at the top of the mountain and have a great descent right before work.

Sounds like fun!

Sounds like an excuse to take a day off....

I would love to do something like that, but the main trail between home and work is under snow (so I would have to ride on pavement -- yuck), there is no way to clean up before work, we have a dress code, and I doubt showing up smelly and dirty would enhance my career.

I've done it at a place near my house that doesn't allow camping but no one ever goes there so they would never know. I usually just do it to test gear in a more real scenario, IE ride first for an hour or two, then bed down and then get up in the morning and ride home or to work. I had a shower at work so it was no problem.

i've done it a few times. let your employer know exactly where you plan to go ahead of time, and what time you plan to return, just in case.

Cool, thanks for the responses. I'm going to do one of these next week and I'll post up a trip report.
