so here's the situation everyone -
possibility to commute on 70% paved road 20% gravel/country 10% dirt roads for a distance of 45-50mls (roundtrip) 2- 3 days a week... what tires do y'all recommend? I have posted earlier that i was using SB8's but after reviewing some posts I am ready for advice...

Also I have fixed my G.I style canteen holder/canteen to front fork (also holds a 2 liter bottle!!) - doing the same on the other side. I have also cannibalized my old EMS internal frame pack - took the top pouch off, turned it inside out and BOOM - handlebar bag with two zippered pockets and plenty of room for a compression bag. I had begun work on a frame pack made from some old Grundens from work but man...i suck at sewing! (getting lessons) - so in the mean time i ordered the new Jandd large frame bag (sorry - i know it's not as cool) with future plans to make my own. Going back to CapRock Canyon State park Thursday so I'll post up some pics when possible.

Jake, did you consider using touring tires? I could swear by my 2.0 Schalbe Duremes for anything not to steep/technical. Looking at the amount of pavement you have that might be a good option. They're hard wearing and have very good puncture resistance.

Nope, not a bad question. I'm just not sure that many people on this site have a lot of experience with the sort of conditions that you describe. Personally, I ride pavement OR gravel/dirt. I rarely mix the two.

But if I had to, I'd try something with smaller knobbies, but a somewhat wide casing. I'm a fan of Continental tires. Maybe check out their Double Fighter II series. I've never used them, but they look like they might fit the bill.

I still use the Continental Contacts that came on my LHT. Obviously great on the road but they're also totally fine for fire roads on decent climbs with some loose gravel. I had a tough time in the sand with them. Most of the classic touring guys swear by Schwalbe Marathons.

Almost any high volume tire will work for that. I would focus on low rolling resistance. I use panaracer paselas every week in 37mm for mixed terrain rides and love them.

If you have more money to spend, consider Grand Bois tires.

Definitely no need for knobs.

I finished the 2013 TD.  I did the whole damn thing,
excluding the 2013 detours, in good style and—as
far as I know—totally in accordance with the rules.
