I'm a bit confused on where to go with all the choices.   Trying to optimize 3 variables -- 1) We're riding a mountain bike tandem, so I'm interested in great cushioning and softness, 2)  Toughness -- want something as reasonably puncture resistant as possible, 3) Anticipate some mud and difficult dirt environments so need good traction but not crazy to the point that its creating lots of rolling resistance.

Finally, would like a "foldable" replacement so that I can carry a spare on the trip.   Leaning toward 2.4" width or larger.

Any recommendations?   Much appreciation.   David

David, I was happy with the reco I got from MikeC for Bontrager XR3 Team Issue. Durability was impressive over 2400 miles on our Rohloff MTB hardtail tandem. The front tire had tons of life left. 29 x 2.4”

I made the mistake of getting the non Team Issue once and paid the price. Avoid that mistake. Another durable and fast tire I’ve loved and would consider is Maxxis’ Ardent Race 2.35, though I have not used it on a tandem.

I would not hesitate to run the XR3 TI again. Our team weight was 270, and I estimate the bike/gear was 90-100.

Have fun tooling up.

Do you already have wheels?  If so, how wide are the rims?

That sort of dictates how wide you can go on tires.

My wife and I rode our mountain tandem out of Banff in late August ending up in Kalispell.
We used Vitoria Mezcals and they were darn impressive. Vittoria recommended the XC-Trail which is a bit heavier but more durable.
Going over Whitefish Divide, it handled all of the rough rock very well.

The most popular tire is the Vittoria Mezcal 2.25. Personally I'm leaning towards the Teravail light & supple Sparwood 2.2. Also popular the Maxxis Icon.
