So I've been known to entertain a crazy idea or two. Here's the one for today: Why shouldn't I run fenders on a Tour Divide ITT?

Reasons I know not to:
 - Muddy/snowy sections could cause unacceptable build up
 - danger of snagging a fender/fender failure causing a crash
 - one more thing to fail

Reason to:
 - Keeps you much drier in intermittent rain showers
 - keeps the drive train cleaner

My biggest issue would be finding fenders that would work on my setup (Mid fat), so I'd likely be doing some fancy DIY thing.

Mucky Nutz? Ass Savers?

I made some and bought some. Keeps the muck off my front 95%, my back 50%, my feet 0%, my seat post, water bottles, frame bag 95%, drive train 10%. They aren't nearly as effective as full coverage fenders, but I also take them almost exclusively on singletrack, and no problems yet.

Heh, that's pretty close to the setup I have now.
