warmth in a hennesey hammock

Hi all,

got a hennesey hammock for lightweight bike/backpacking but i'm hitting a brick wall with ideas for keeping warm (underneath) I'm looking for something that'll pack small and light and doesn't cost the earth like the down underblanket that they sell on their own website.

can anybody let me know what they've worked out.

tried
3/4 thermarest (too short, heavy)
full thermarest (right length, heavy)
ccf roll mat (too bulky but good warmth)
windscreen reflector (good weight, cheap, bit long for packing, not very warm but better than now't)

Yep, biggest problem with a HH is staying warm (without spending money on an Underquilt).  IMHO the best and cheapest solution would be to get the following things...
First, buy a Speer SPE from Speer Hammocks.  It will help you stay on top of your pad much better.

Next, buy yourself a Gossamer Gear 1/4 ThinLight Pad, cut it down to size when you get it and slide it into the SPE.  this is a very light solution.  It is a little bit bulkier but the ThinLight folds up much nicer than a blue CCF pad.

Also, what works great is cutting it down to about your knee-caps or so.  You'd be surprised how little insulation in you need on your feet.  Especially if you are sliding your pack under your knees to keep them from hyper-extending in the night. 

That pad should keep you warm to around 40 degrees, maybe a little cooler depending on your sleep system. 

I'd buy the GG pad first, try it out without the SPE and see if you stay on top of it.  If you do save yourself the money and don't get the SPE.  If you're sliding off it then get the SPE.

Gossamer haven't got any of the thinlight pads in stock so i called my local foam supplier and they had some in, in even bigger sheets.

Cost = peanuts

Tried it out today and works well from what i can see, just need to trim it down a bit as it's huge.

Good luck with it!  Once you figure out your set-up it's hard to ever go back to the ground.

suffered from a small amount of condensation with the evazote pad but still kept warm, two friends used the pads and still complained about cold backs though.

jury's still out.

while i have slept in a hammock before, i've never used a backpacking hammock, so this may not work for reasons that escape me but are obvious to all of you...

wouldn't it work better to just incorporate the hammock and sleeping bag? have the "top" of the bag sewn inside the hammock, and the "bottom" of the bag sewn loosely outside/underneath the hammock. wouldn't you then experience the same warmth underneath as you would on the top while sleeping on the ground?

i just googled "evazote bristol" and it spat two places out.

cheap as chips £7.66 each for an 8'x4" sheet

I used a HH last year and got rid of it for this year because of the lack of insulation. I ended up using a down quilt and a Jacks R Better down underquilt.

The emergency bivy inside will collect a lot of condensation. It's also noisy as hell.
