Alright, I know this is going to sound like spam, but some friends of mine are in the proscess of starting a company with which the flagship product is a tarp/backpack combo called the dirtbagger. When they get the website up I will post it, but I figured there would be some interest on this in the bikepacking community, seeing as it take out two birds with one stone, shelter and a pack. I believe it lends itself to bikepacking, seeing as you can carry it as your shelter, and a "just in case" pack. Input or criticism is welcome! Thanks for reading! Tazeus Steyskal

there's actually a process for improvising a pack out of a tarp, forget the name. Perhaps a "porters pack" or some such. Curious to see it. It's not spam if it's relevant.

But, this is not a improvised item, rather it has a full harness. Therein lies it's strength over that method.

Seems like for this crowd, a related product idea would be to have the tarp/tent convert into a big seat bag.

Guy over on hammock forums created a pack / hammock setup that unfolded into the lower portion of the hammock. He still had a trap. He used stuff sacks inside the folded framework for his carrying capacity.

Yeah, a pack was marketed by Dana Designs back in the day that was a hammock/tarp/pack combo. I think it was called a beavertail pack due to how it closed. Cool idea for sure, but it definitely had a really overbuilt frame and strap system in my opinion. One inch wide padded straps are way less comfortable than 2 inch wide webbing.
