Flat kit:  2 tubes, chain breaker, patch kit, mini morph pump, multi tool.

Dromedary bag w/3 liters water.

500-1000 calories of food.

Question:  Has anyone put their water filter in the frame bag?  I have stayed away from doing that because with lots of rattling I imagine something might break...

I usually put my water purifier (Katadyn Hiker) in the frame bag, and I don't see how it could harm it in any way.

I use a Hiker Pro as well.  I tend to think of it as somewhat finiky filter.  When it flows well I like it, but it occasionally will miss a pump or two.  I guess I'm paranoid that the vibrations might mess up the pump seal or something like that.

It sounds like you've put it in the frame bag numerous times (25- 50 rides?) and never had problems?

I have degraded/destroyed the following items in a frame bag:

NUUN tablets slightly vaporized
Holes in plastic baggies of powders when alone
Holes in extra tubes in close proximity to tools

Keep in mind that these were things that could have been prevented and were the result of many bumpy rides without checking any equipment.

I will have to try the filter in the frame bag, especially for those long day rides without a backpack (water within 4-5 hours).

No, I haven't done it that many times, I just don't see how it could be harmed by it. The water filter is light and mechanically very simple, with no hard and heavy parts bouncing around or rubbing against each other. I always try to pack my frame bag so that the contents does not move very much, though, using clothing items if necessary to pad things, and this far haven't had any problems.

The only reason I can think of is that maybe the product wasn't designed for the rigors of mountain biking... that, and just the finite life of gear in general. However, I think I just wanted to hear that someone else has put the filter in that location and it IS mechanically simple. sign13
