I've had transmission issues when it was on the straps of a backpack. For a while I had it mounted on my stem but now the GPS is there. I finally sewed a pocket on the top of my Carousel seatbag and now it sits there and faces directly upward.

I carry mine on the top of the shoulder strap of my hydration pack in a little pouch from Wingnut, so that it points skyward when I'm walking or riding.

I've been putting mine face up inside the Revelant gas tank pouch - this works great unless you have a wreck and can't move to your bike to hit an emergency help button. In that case it is much better to keep it like Toby mentioned on top of your backpack/hydration bag.
On the other hand if your bike gets stolen "as in the case with Mathew Lee on the Tour Divide last year" then you can track the thief to recover your bike  nono

Good idea.  I wear a Wingnut also.  I'll give that a shot.  Thanks for the tip.
