I was supposed to try the BBT in a day early spring this year but due to a knee injury I had to put it off. My knee has recoped and I'm ready, now the heat is an issue. I can't wait 'till next spring. I'm going to try it in 2 days.
For those that don't know the BBT starts at Leo Carrillo SB north of Mulibu and ends at Will Rogers SP near Santa Monica. Stretches for about 70 miles and only forty of those bikes are legal. The other 30 miles I plan on taking the bike apart and carry.
Now I've heard about the stupid rule about bikes on wilderness. That's what it is STUPID. What harm can a dismantled bike do in wilderness? The trail goes through Bonie Wilderness, about 6 miles. I emailed the FS and asked them about that. They said not to ride the bike it even sound like HaB would be aloud but it would only slow me down. The rest odf the sections bikes are not aloud 'cuz it would be too dangerous. Tight steep swicht backs, drop offs and stuff like that.
Any takers? This will be nice easy way to judge it. Next spring go for the one day journey. I think Malibu Creek SP cuts it right in half and it would be the place to spend the night.

Stupid or not some ranger may come along and choose to enforce it. That said I did carry through a short section  4 miles of Wilderness on my 06 AZT trip I saw it as a good way to test my carry system before reaching the Canyon. Every ranger that I have talked to about the trip thought is was fine considering the bike was in pieces the entire time I was inside the Wilderness. In fact most of them are quite impressed at the die hard mentality and the fact that I did not ride but carried the bike. I think the problem would be that most riders (non bike packers)  do not have that die hard mentality and would be likely to poach/ride rather then carry. I did take several pictures as evidence of the dismantled bike being carried not rolled just in case some questions came up latter.

That was pretty good. You did not stick to the BBT though.
Are you interested to tag along?

some buddies and I rode the BBT south to north on a two day trip last fall (2009). I too was concerned about this wilderness area and spoke to a few of the rangers ahead of time to make sure of the rules and their enforcement here. We carried fully assemble bikes through the wilderness section with their approval.
Traveling from the south the wilderness doesn't actually begin until right before the ridgeline from which you will descend into sycamore cyn. Talk to the rangers if at all possible they're mostly sensible about choosing what to enforce.

MCSP is a good stopping point if riding north to south but if traveling the other direction I recommend climbing bulldog in the evening and sleeping near the ridge.

FWIW we opted to go south to north so that the wilderness area would be mostly downhill.

Hi
How was your BBT ride.  I live in Orange county and have ridden in the Santa Monica's a lot.  I would consider doing this ride in the fall or early spring.   Probably in a South to North direction. Any thoughts

I haven't done it yet. I was too busy training. Tomorrow I leave to hike Whitney friday and ride the White Mountains sunday. It'll be epic.
I'll try the BBT some time in the fall. I'll keep you posted, if interested.
