I started the GDMBR too early (mid-June) on a N to S routing and ran into a lot of snow on all passes from Banff southward through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. Snow made for a lot more bikeNhike than I expected. Yet leaving later would have meant more adobe mud in New Mexico from heat generated thunderstorms. You choose a time and direction and live with it. A great ride worth every saddle sore.
While scouting and planning the route I rode some of the CDT in MT and WY but only found it bike packing friendly in small portions and not a good choice for a longer distance goal in my experience. YMMV.
best of luck on any route you choose.
