I will be in Flagstaff this summer for a week or two and am considering giving the Coconino a try either in August or I could take the trip in June and do it then. My guess is that August would be pretty hot and dry making it harder to find water and also necessitate carrying more water between stops. Any thoughts or opinions on August or June will help.

Hi guys,
Didn't want to start a new thread on this so I thought I would ask here.... Is the first or second week of April (generally) too early for the coconino? What would be the concern? Thanks, Adam.

Adam
The only issues I can think of for early April would be the north sides of Mingus and Williams mountains.
It will all depend on when that area gets it's last snow storm and or how early things start warming up.
Either way it should still be possible with variations.
On Mingus the HAB at the top, north facing, could be pretty dicey if it's icy, you could always do the SS bypass that would put you on the south side of the mountain.
The trail on the north side of Williams wouldn't be that bad just more of a pain with snow. It can easily be bypassed tho.

Great information Tim. I'll be looking over the race thread in the coming weeks to learn the route a bit. It would be my first time in Arizona and I'm just looking for an early season trip to get some heat and escape the rain up north here at that time of year.
Thanks.

A buddy and I plan on doing this trail in mid to late August. Since it is still Monsoon season, how long of an afternoon rain can we expect each day? Is it crazy with hail or just a refreshing shower?
Thanks, Kip
