SO what are the pros and cons of doing the CT from Durango vs from Denver?

If you are not acclimatized, going from Durango will kill you that much sooner. If you're from CO and used to 12k then it's not as big of a deal.

Starting out from Durango would make for a rough first day or two. Tons of climbing and you are quickly up at 'altitude', whereas from Denver you get to work your way up higher and higher, in a way. Cataract/Coney is probably about the same in either direction. Likewise for Sargents Mesa. Going down Fooses would be easier... climbing up to Searle/Kokomo likely harder. Georgia pass -- harder. It's a shuttle ride (DGO=7000', DEN=5000'). I say go for it, set a DGO->DEN record.  |

I am planning to go from Denver to Durango during CTR2010 and back. I would like to explore as many singletracks as possible during about 20 days vacation so maybe back route will not follow the CT. I hope I am strong enough for that monster and I'll realize that dream in touring mode.
I would be glad if someone gives me direction how to choose back route which will be little less hard than CT and with similar landscape/singletrack beauty. I am also looking for company. Anyone would like to join?

Let me clarify; my plan is to ride from Durango to Denver (in reverse) for CRT 2010, along the CTR race route (whatever that is deemed to be) and during the 2010 CTR race (same start time, different direction).
So I won't be going exploring, rather sticking to the course/race. Be curious if anyone else will be doing it in reverse (doesn't change my decision, but be nice to have company during the start).

the advantage is: get the harder stuff over with sooner and more services when you need them, in the end. Plus you see more people (coming the typical southern way).

One other thing is Durango is a Fun town to end in, very friendly, lots of fun food and good bars to chill out and recover! I once rode out of durango, it was brutal, climbed for two days straight, but again that was with a Bob trailer, yikes that hurt.

I use to live in Durango and agree its a cool town to finish in. Since i live in the front range now, its also cool to finish and be home  . Plus I like to see more people go by (including the CTR races heading south). |
