I am considering a trip to do the Maah Daah Hey this coming July and am concerned about the weather. Does anyone have any experience / beta on average temps / rainfall / etc.

A group of us rode the trail last June (after a wet spring).  We had perfect temps and weather, but the trail was a disaster in spots. The grass was exceptionally high (easy to miss a trail post), ticks everywhere and a lot of trail slumping.  The trail was worse in the north end and improved as we went south.  I would definitely check with locals before you commit.  It is a beautiful area though - We ended up doing a hybrid of dirt roads and trail sections.

The Maah Daah Hey II trail was perfect (heads south of Medora).

North to South.  I don't think it matters.  That was just how our shuttle worked.

Started at Magpie Camp - Elkhorn Camp - Wannagan Camp - Finished in Medora

We did the Maah Daah Hey II trail (runs south of Medora) on our first day, then got shuttled to Magpie.

I've never ridden there, but in regards to direction . . . check this site out!

http://windhistory.com/station.html?KDIK

You can click the months on the bottom to include or exclude them from the averages.  So you could just get the average from July, for instance.  Looks like in that month the winds come most likely from SSE or WNW.  So probably not a huge difference in which way you ride.  The site also has a map view where you can scroll around the country and look at all of the weather stations.... pretty neat.

We rode the Mendora are July 2, 2014.  I USED to ride much and far....but did not for years until now.  The Maah Daah Hey Trail, and the reason we went to ND, was too much for me.  Another time, I might just go back.  But that trail is NOT for those out of shape or beginners.

We did enjoy riding our bikes all around town in Mendora and back and forth from our Campground.

How was your trip?  Any photos?
