It seems to be more relevant to urban areas that have "designated" bike routes, but it did find me a rail-trail I didn't know about outside of my local area.

Cool, I travel a lot and try to get a hotel next to local paths for a quick spin, this will help in the bigger towns

I live in Portland, which is pretty bike friendly and has dense network of bike lanes and paths. I haven't spent a ton of time checking out Google's new bike overlay yet, but so far, for my town anyway, I'd say they've done a pretty good job with this.
